New Jersey

The New Jersey Bar exam, a 2-day exam, consists of the six-hour Multistate Bar Examination (MBE), weighted 50%; seven 45-minute New Jersey essay questions, weighted 50%.

Essays are graded, the Bar Examiners write, on the applicant’s ability “to identify and analyze issues and to present an organized, coherent and well-written response within the prescribed format.” The successful applicant must achieve a combined scaled score of 136. Applicants also must pass the Multistate Professional Responsibility Examination (MPRE) with a scaled score of 75.

The following subjects may be tested on the New Jersey bar exam: agency (business associations), civil procedure, conflicts of law, constitutional law, contracts, including UCC Article 2 sales, corporations (business associations), criminal law and procedure, disciplinary rules (professional responsibility), equity (remedies), evidence, family law, partnership (business associations), real property, including real estate finance, torts, UCC Articles 1 (general provisions), 2 (sales), 3 (negotiable instruments), 9 (secured transactions), wills, trusts, and estates, zoning and planning.
